Metal Kitchen Cabinets: Why Commercial Kitchens Are Switching
From hospitals to hotels, stainless steel modular kitchens are fast replacing MDF and laminate. Here's why the switch makes business sense.
Commercial kitchens operate at a pace and intensity that domestic kitchen products simply cannot withstand. MDF cabinets swell with moisture, laminate chips under impact, and wooden carcasses harbour bacteria in unsealed joints. Stainless steel changes the equation entirely.
The Case for SS 304
Food-grade SS 304 is the industry standard for commercial kitchen surfaces in India and globally. Its chromium oxide passive layer makes it inherently corrosion-resistant without the need for paint or coating — meaning there's nothing to chip, peel, or contaminate food.
For coastal or marine environments where chloride attack is a concern, SS 316L with its molybdenum content provides an additional layer of protection.
Modular System Benefits
A modular stainless steel kitchen allows the layout to be reconfigured as menu requirements change — a critical advantage for hospitality and catering operations that evolve year on year. Standard 600 mm wide modules can be mixed and matched: base cabinets, wall cabinets, worktops, sinks, and under-counter refrigeration all integrate within the same dimensional grid.
GI and Aluminium Options
Not every commercial kitchen demands the premium of stainless steel. For institutional canteens, school kitchens, and cost-sensitive projects, galvanised iron (GI) modular cabinets with an epoxy top coat provide a durable, corrosion-resistant alternative at a significantly lower cost.
Aluminium modular kitchens occupy the middle ground — lighter than SS, resistant to rust without galvanic coating, and suitable for coastal environments where the weight of a full stainless installation may be a structural concern.
MS Powder Coated: The Budget Option
Mild steel cabinets with 60–80 micron electrostatic powder coating are the right choice for dry storage and non-critical food preparation areas where the hygienic-grade requirements of SS are not mandated. Available in a full RAL colour palette and at a fraction of the cost of stainless systems.
